What Do Your Spirit Guides Actually Do?
Part One of a three-part series about understanding and working with your Spirit Guides.
Spirit Guides seem to be on everyone's mind lately.
I hear questions about them all the time. Who are they? How do I know if I have one? Are they trying to tell me something? And perhaps most often, why aren't they helping me when I need them?
I think some of that confusion comes from misunderstanding what a Spirit Guide is actually here to do.
While there are lots of YouTube videos, social media posts, and even books on the subject, I thought I'd throw in my two cents after all the years I've spent working with not only my own Spirit Guides, but the guides of many others as well.
I think of Spirit Guides as loving, non-physical teachers, mentors, and companions who support us as we move through this human experience. They may inspire us, encourage us, help us see something differently, or gently nudge us toward an opportunity we might otherwise overlook.
But they are not here to run our lives.
Guidance, Not Instructions
Your guides may help bring something to your awareness through an intuitive thought, a sudden knowing, a repeated idea, a dream, a synchronicity, or even a conversation that seems to happen at exactly the right time.
Sometimes their guidance is surprisingly subtle.
We tend to imagine Spirit shouting, "Turn left! Take the job! Leave the relationship!"
More often, the experience feels like a quiet internal nudge that says, Pay attention to this.
And then you decide what to do with it.
When I have a big question on my mind, my guides like to tell me, "You can choose this or choose that. There is no wrong answer. Only a different experience."
Yes, it's annoying!
Support for Your Growth
It's important to know that your guides care deeply about your growth, which means their idea of "help" may not always look like ours.
When we're struggling, naturally we want the difficult thing to disappear. But some experiences ask us to develop courage, boundaries, compassion, patience, discernment, or trust in ourselves.
A loving guide can support you through that process without removing the experience that is helping you grow.
That isn't abandonment.
It may actually be a deeper form of support.
Comfort Along the Way
And yes, I believe our guides can also be a source of tremendous comfort.
During grief, uncertainty, fear, or one of those seasons when life simply feels heavier than usual, you may begin noticing a sense of reassurance, a meaningful synchronicity, or an unexpected feeling that you are not navigating everything alone.
You still have your human life to live.
You still make the choices.
You still get to change your mind, make mistakes, learn, grow, and choose again.
Your guides simply walk alongside you.
And perhaps that's one of the most important things to understand about them:
Their job isn't to take over your life. Their job is to help you become more fully yourself as you live it.
